Plates
Plates serve as the basis for the construction of workpiece clamps. These flat and robust components are used in the manufacturing industries, preferably on machine tools, to securely and firmly mount workpieces on machine tables or fixtures. Custom-made versions are available on request.

Plates for workpiece clamping are essential elements in production technology. Particularly in the areas of mechanical processing and in machine tool construction. Clamping plates are used to fasten workpieces securely and precisely. Especially during machining processes such as milling, turning, grinding or drilling, correct clamping of workpieces is crucial. Clamping therefore determines quality of machining and safety of the entire process.
There are different types of clamping plates, each designed for specific applications and workpieces. The norelem range includes two different styles:
A key function of clamping plates is to fasten workpieces. Workpieces are held firmly on the plate by different clamping mechanisms. Fastening prevents any movement or vibration of workpieces during the machining process. Steady fastening is necessary to carry out precise machining and to achieve the desired tolerances and surface qualities.
Besides fastening workpieces the clamping plate also contributes significantly to the stability of the entire system. It has to be able to withstand forces that occur during machining without deforming or slipping. This requires the use of tough materials such as cast iron or aluminium, which not only offer high strength but also good damping properties. Cast iron in particular is widely used for its ability to dampen vibrations.
Another important point is that clamping plates guarantee safety during the machining process. Firmly fastened workpieces minimise the risk of possible accidents caused by workpieces coming loose or slipping.
What is a baseplate?
A baseplate is also called clamping plate or mounting plate. It serves as a firm and steady base on which workpieces or assemblies can be securely fastened during processing or assembly. Baseplates are usually made of tough materials such as cast iron or aluminium. Cast iron is particularly valued for its excellent damping properties and stability. It absorbs vibrations well, and that increases the precision of machining. If mobility of the plate is important, aluminium is preferred because of its lower weight.
The use of clamping plates covers various areas of mechanical processing. Clamping plates has a variety of mounting options, such as threaded holes or special adapters. These mounting options allow the mounting of different clamping fixtures and workpieces.
The norelem range includes baseplates with three different mounting options.
- Baseplate with threaded hole made of aluminium: This clamping plate has several threaded holes that allow for flexible and steady workpiece mounting. Screws or bolts can be screwed directly into the plate by threaded holes.
- Baseplate with grid hole made of GJL 300: Clamping plates with grid holes are made of high-quality GJL 300 cast iron. The material is known for its high damping properties and stability. The plate has a grid of precisely arranged holes that allow for flexible and repeatable positioning of workpieces. The plates are perfect for applications where high dimensional accuracy and vibration damping is required.
- Baseplate with flange annealed made of GJL 250: The baseplate is made of GJL 250 cast iron. The material is given additional strength and stability by the annealing process. The plate features a flange that allows for secure and steady mounting on machines. It is particularly suitable for applications that require high resilience and excellent damping properties.
In operation, clamping plates are mounted on a machine, such as a milling machine or lathe. Workpieces are then fastened to the plate with clamping fixtures, clamps or screws. Steady fastening of workpieces is crucial to absorb forces that occur during processing and to prevent slippage or deformation of these workpieces.

A slotted plate, also known as a T-slots plate or T-slot plate, is a special type of baseplate. It features T-shaped slots that run over the entire surface of the plate at regular intervals. T-slots are elongated slots that allow clamping devices to be flexibly positioned and the workpiece to be fastened at different points.
T-slots plates are used in many machining applications. They are particularly useful in prototype or , small batch production and any situation where frequent changeover is necessary. Whether in mechanical engineering, tool making and mould construction or in the automotive industry, the ability to position clamping devices quickly and flexibly saves time and increases efficiency of machining processes.
The properties of T-slots plates are extremely important for selection and use. Selection of a T-slots plate is based on material, T-slot structure and design. These three features ensure that workpieces are optimally fastened during machining. This not only contributes to the quality of the finished parts, but also to the safety and durability of machines and tools used.
Properties of a T-slots plate that should be consider upon selection:
- slot structure
- material and surface finish
- versatility
- size variability
The norelem range includes three different types of T-slots plate. Parameters such as width or shape of the plate are customisable. The main difference between T-slots plates is the material.
- T-slots plates made of grey cast iron (GJL 250)
- T-slots plates made of GJL 300
- T-slots plates made of aluminium
Cast iron is popular and valued for its fine dampening properties and stability. Aluminium, on the other hand, is lighter than cast iron and often used for lighter workpieces.
Variety and customised products
Besides the various clamping plates, this product family also includes other products. Please find below a brief overview.
The strip is optionally available in GJL 250 annealed or EN AW-7075, a high-strength aluminium alloy. The lengths of the strip are finished by saw cut. Precision of the machined surfaces features a tolerance of ±0.25 mm. Tolerances in length vary depending on the length of the strip. This property ensures a high level of accuracy and quality of the strips.
Pallets by norelem are available in different versions. Operating parts are directly positioned on and attached to the machine table. Pallets are used to construct modular fixtures and are matched to machine tables with machine tools according to DIN 55201 and machine tables according to JIS6337-1980.
The range also includes accessories for individual clamping plates, such as:
